Her canvases are intimate and personal, yet universal. In them, one senses the patience of paint waiting for her return, the trust between artist and medium, and the quiet persistence of stories that want to be told.
Annette Kamfer’s life and work embody the essence of artistic exploration: a continual unfolding, step by step, never fully planned, always open to surprise. Through her watercolours, she invites us to see the world not only as it is, but as it might be, alive with light, detail, and the joy of discovery.
“I paint from thought and feeling
with unknown depth”
I paint the colour of everyday life — market stalls heaped with gold and red, fruit carts gleaming after the rain, cottage gardens spilling over their walls. Watercolour is my language; colour is my joy.
I paint stories from everywhere: new discoveries in distant lands and right before my own door. Often I get them from far within my thoughts.
Special people and children sometimes recognise me on my return and call out, ‘My friend, my friend!’
I appreciate different countries, each in their own way. I see the light and joy of the world. I discover step by step, never planned, often getting lost — but perhaps that is just another way.
When I return home, I fill my days with colours and images coming to life. Details fill spaces I thought forgotten. And soon, another opportunity will lead me on new paths, with paint waiting patiently until I am back home.

Exhibitions and awards
Annette Kamfer started full-time artistic work in 1980, with watercolour as her preferred medium.

Sanlam commission of Erica flowers, reproduced as gifts for clients.

1982
Solo exhibition through Stigting Simon van der Stel at Jean Welz Gallery, Worcester.

1992
Solo exhibition at E.P.S.F.A. Gallery, Port Elizabeth.
She has since taken part in numerous group exhibitions in South Africa and Namibia.
